Who Can Apply?

The MIF fellowship is designed for non-Japanese researchers under 45 years old who resonate with MIF’s core values and possess a Doctoral degree (Ph.D.). To be eligible, you must:

  • Have an offer from a host institution in Japan.
  • Show proficiency in English or Japanese.
  • Not have had extensive previous stays in Japan.
  • Currently hold a job in your home country and plan to return there after the fellowship.

Fellowship Perks

As a fellow, you’ll receive:

  • A monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 for research and living expenses.
  • A JPY 120,000 arrival fund to help settle in Japan.
  • Economy class round-trip airfare to Japan.
  • Comprehensive overseas travel insurance.
  • An opportunity to join a study tour in Japan.

You are free to choose a host institution in Japan (universities, national research institutions, or the equivalent
facilities in private sector) to carry out your research.

How to Apply

Follow these steps carefully to apply for this fellowship:

  1. Application Form: Firstly, download the application form from the MIF website (https://www.mif-japan.org/en/fellowship/announcement/?hl=en), attach a recent photo.
  2. Statement of Purpose: Explain in about 500 words why the MIF fellowship is right for you.
  3. Detailed Research Plan: Describe your project’s goals, methods, and potential impact.
  4. Curriculum Vitae and Publications: Highlight relevant work, especially publications related to your proposed research.
  5. Recommendation Letter: Obtain a letter from your current employer confirming your qualifications and availability for the fellowship.
  6. Academic Certificates: Include Ph.D., Master’s, and Bachelor’s diplomas, with translations if necessary.
  7. Invitation Letter: Your host institution in Japan must agree to support your research and facilitate your stay.
